Compare two texts

Paste the original and the changed version: additions and deletions are highlighted instantly, in your browser.

Updated November 6, 2026

Paste two texts to see the differences.

How it works

  1. Paste the original on the left and the new version on the right.
  2. Pick the granularity: lines for code and lists, words for prose, characters for small edits.
  3. Read the result: green is added, red is removed.

Choosing how to compare

Words is the default and fits prose: a contract clause that came back edited, two versions of an article, a translation and its revision. Lines is for code, configuration and lists. Characters catches a changed digit in a number or a typo fix. Sentences shows which sentences were rewritten without flooding the view with single words. JSON parses both sides and compares the data: a reordered key or different spacing is not a change, a changed value is, and a duplicate key is flagged.

Making noise disappear

Ignore spacing hides changes that are only tabs, double spaces or indentation; Ignore case hides capitalization; Ignore line ends ignores trailing spaces at the end of lines. Switch the view between side by side, unified and inline depending on the width of your screen, and Swap turns the comparison around. If everything shows as changed, one side is probably empty or the texts differ in line endings; try Words mode with Ignore spacing.

Keeping and sharing the result

Copy changes puts the highlighted differences on the clipboard, and Unified diff (.diff) saves the standard patch format that version control and code review tools read. Up to 500 000 characters per side, about 250 pages, are compared on your device in a background worker, so a confidential agreement never leaves your computer and nothing is kept after you close the page.

Why people use it

  • Free, no account

Every tool is free, with no sign-up, no e-mail address and no limit on how often you use it.

  • Your files stay on your device

The browser opens the file and processes it in memory, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can be kept, leaked or looked at.

  • No watermark

The result is yours as it is: no watermark, no branding, no trial version.

  • Any device

A phone, a tablet or a computer with a current browser is enough: no app to install, no software to update.

  • Works offline after the first visit

The browser keeps the pages and their engines, so a tool you have opened once keeps working without a connection.

  • Open-source engines

The code that does the work is open-source software, named on the Licences page, running as WebAssembly in your browser.

Why it is private

Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.

While a file is being processed, the counter under the result shows the page's network traffic: 0 requests and 0 B for your data.

How to check it yourself, step by step

What you can check yourself

Open your browser's developer tools on the Network tab before you drop a file: while the tool works you will see no request carrying your data, and the counter under every result shows the page's own measurement.

The site sets no cookies, so there is no cookie banner. Anonymous usage counts and error reports without file names are the only things that leave the page, as the privacy policy describes.

Every change goes through thousands of automated tests in three browser engines, including a guard that fails a test if a single byte of a file leaves the page.

How we test

Frequently asked questions

How large can the texts be?
500,000 characters per side, about 250 pages. The comparison runs in a background worker, so the page never freezes; a character-level comparison of two very different long texts falls back to words after two seconds and says so.
Is the text stored?
No. It stays in the page until you leave; nothing is sent or saved.
Can I compare files?
Yes: "Open file" under each box, or drop one or two text files (.txt, .md, .csv, .json, .xml, .html, code, logs) on the page. One file fills the empty side, two fill both. Files are read in your browser and never uploaded.
Which algorithm is used?
The jsdiff library (Myers diff), the same approach as git.
Can I compare two Word documents?
Not as .docx directly. Open each in your word processor, select all, copy and paste it into a box, or save them as .txt and drop both files; formatting is not compared, only the text.
Can I compare two PDFs?
No, this tool reads text only. Copy the text out of each PDF (Image to text helps with scanned ones) and paste it into the two boxes.
Can I ignore spaces or capital letters?
Yes. Tick Ignore spacing, Ignore case or Ignore line ends; the comparison is run again at once and the counter shows how many changes remain.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Paste each text into its box; the inline or unified view fits a narrow screen better than side by side.
Can I export the differences?
Yes: Copy changes for a quick paste, or Unified diff (.diff) for a patch file. Nothing is stored on this site either way.

Install it as an app

Chrome, Edge and Android browsers offer to install this site from the address bar or the menu; on iPhone use Share, then Add to Home Screen. It opens like an app, keeps working offline and still processes everything on your device.
