How it works

  1. Paste or type your text in the box.
  2. The counts update as you type; the most frequent words appear below.
  3. Tick "Keep this text in this browser" if you want to come back to it; otherwise nothing is stored.

A limit for every platform

Pick a preset and the bar shows what is left: 280 characters for a post on X, 2200 for an Instagram caption and 150 for a bio, 60 for a page title and 160 for a meta description, 160 for an SMS, 3000 for a LinkedIn post, 100 for a YouTube title, or 500, 1000 and 2000 words for an essay. Type any other goal in words or characters. For SMS the tool also shows how many messages the text takes and which character left the standard alphabet.

Essays, speeches and translations

Reading time at 220 words per minute tells you how long an article holds a reader; speaking time at 140 words per minute sizes a speech or a voice-over. The most frequent words list shows what you repeat. Words are split with the browser's language rules, so Romanian, Spanish, Portuguese, German compounds and languages written without spaces are all counted, which makes it a fair check for translations against a source text.

Small text tools on the same page

Open a .txt, .md, .csv or .docx of up to 20 MB straight into the box, change the case to upper, lower, title or sentence case, tidy double spaces, copy the text or download it as .txt. The text stays on your device, and it is kept between visits only if you tick Keep this text in this browser; Clear removes it, with an undo for a few seconds.

Why people use it

  • Free, no account

Every tool is free, with no sign-up, no e-mail address and no limit on how often you use it.

  • Your files stay on your device

The browser opens the file and processes it in memory, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can be kept, leaked or looked at.

  • No watermark

The result is yours as it is: no watermark, no branding, no trial version.

  • Any device

A phone, a tablet or a computer with a current browser is enough: no app to install, no software to update.

  • Works offline after the first visit

The browser keeps the pages and their engines, so a tool you have opened once keeps working without a connection.

  • Open-source engines

The code that does the work is open-source software, named on the Licences page, running as WebAssembly in your browser.

Why it is private

Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.

While a file is being processed, the counter under the result shows the page's network traffic: 0 requests and 0 B for your data.

How to check it yourself, step by step

What you can check yourself

Open your browser's developer tools on the Network tab before you drop a file: while the tool works you will see no request carrying your data, and the counter under every result shows the page's own measurement.

The site sets no cookies, so there is no cookie banner. Anonymous usage counts and error reports without file names are the only things that leave the page, as the privacy policy describes.

Every change goes through thousands of automated tests in three browser engines, including a guard that fails a test if a single byte of a file leaves the page.

How we test

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?
With the browser's language-aware segmenter (Intl.Segmenter), which handles apostrophes, hyphens and languages written without spaces.
Does "characters" include spaces?
There are two counts: with spaces and without. Emoji and accented letters count as one character each.
How is reading time calculated?
At an average of 220 words per minute for silent reading and 140 for speaking aloud.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. It is counted in your browser and kept only in your browser's local storage, which you can clear with the Clear button.
How are sentences counted?
A sentence ends at a period, question or exclamation mark followed by a space (or at full-width Chinese and Japanese punctuation), except after abbreviations and initials (Dr., e.g., p.m., D.C.), which are known per language. A line break ends a sentence when the line ends with such punctuation, when the next line starts with a capital letter, a digit or a bullet, or when a blank line separates them; a sentence wrapped across lines without those counts once. A list of three items is therefore three sentences.
Can I set a limit, like 280 characters for X?
Yes. Pick a platform (X, Instagram, meta description, SMS, LinkedIn, YouTube) or an essay length, or type a custom goal; the bar shows what remains or how far over you are. A .txt, .md, .csv or .docx file can be opened straight into the box.
Can I count the words in a Word document?
Yes. Open a .docx of up to 20 MB with Open file and its text goes into the box; .txt, .md and .csv work too. The file is read on your device.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in the browser. Paste the text or open a file; the counts and the limit bar update as you type.
Does it count words in languages other than English?
Yes. The browser's language-aware segmenter handles accents, apostrophes and hyphens in any language, and languages written without spaces such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai.
Why does my count differ from my word processor?
Programs disagree on hyphenated words, numbers, dashes and stray punctuation, so a difference of a few words on a long text is normal. For a strict limit, use the counter of the platform that sets it.

Install it as an app

Chrome, Edge and Android browsers offer to install this site from the address bar or the menu; on iPhone use Share, then Add to Home Screen. It opens like an app, keeps working offline and still processes everything on your device.
