Word to PDF

Drop a .docx and get a PDF with the same headings, lists, tables and pictures, laid out on your device. The document never leaves it.

Options

How it works

  1. Drop a .docx anywhere on this page, or pick several.
  2. Keep the document's page size and typefaces, or choose A4 or Letter and one face for everything.
  3. Download the PDF, or send it on to Compress, Merge, Sign or Protect.

What is kept and what is not

The converter reads the .docx itself, not a picture of it: paragraphs with their alignment, spacing and indents; Title and Heading 1 to 6; bold, italic, underline, strikethrough and colour; bullets and numbered lists with their levels; simple tables with borders, shading and merged cells; inline pictures; page size, orientation and margins; the header and footer with page numbers; page breaks. Tracked deletions are dropped, insertions kept, as in a clean copy.

What it cannot draw it leaves out and counts in a note under the result: charts, SmartArt, equations, footnotes, text boxes, EMF and WMF pictures. Fonts are the one visible change: the PDF embeds DejaVu Sans, Serif and Mono, with the same weights and the same Latin, Cyrillic and Greek letters, so a document in Romanian, Spanish or Portuguese keeps every accent.

When to use it

A CV or an application form the recipient should not edit, a contract to sign afterwards, a thesis chapter to print the same on any machine, a report to attach to an e-mail. Pick A4 or Letter when the printer on the other end expects it; the margins stay as in the document. Afterwards the PDF can go straight to Compress PDF for an upload limit, Merge PDF to join it with others, Sign PDF or Protect PDF.

Why people use it

  • Free, no account

Every tool is free, with no sign-up, no e-mail address and no limit on how often you use it.

  • Your files stay on your device

The browser opens the file and processes it in memory, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can be kept, leaked or looked at.

  • No watermark

The result is yours as it is: no watermark, no branding, no trial version.

  • Any device

A phone, a tablet or a computer with a current browser is enough: no app to install, no software to update.

  • Works offline after the first visit

The browser keeps the pages and their engines, so a tool you have opened once keeps working without a connection.

  • Open-source engines

The code that does the work is open-source software, named on the Licences page, running as WebAssembly in your browser.

Why it is private

Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.

While a file is being processed, the counter under the result shows the page's network traffic: 0 requests and 0 B for your data.

How to check it yourself, step by step

What you can check yourself

Open your browser's developer tools on the Network tab before you drop a file: while the tool works you will see no request carrying your data, and the counter under every result shows the page's own measurement.

The site sets no cookies, so there is no cookie banner. Anonymous usage counts and error reports without file names are the only things that leave the page, as the privacy policy describes.

Every change goes through thousands of automated tests in three browser engines, including a guard that fails a test if a single byte of a file leaves the page.

How we test

Frequently asked questions

Does the PDF look exactly like the document in Word?
Close, not identical. Text, headings, bold and italic, lists, simple tables, pictures, page size, margins, headers and page numbers are kept. The fonts are replaced by DejaVu Sans, Serif or Mono, so line breaks can fall in other places; SmartArt, charts, equations, footnotes and text boxes are left out, and the result says how many.
Which files are accepted?
DOCX, the format Word has written since 2007, and what LibreOffice, Google Docs and Pages export. Old .doc files are not read: save them as .docx first.
Is the document uploaded?
No. The .docx is unzipped and laid out by our own code in a Web Worker on your device, and the PDF is written there too. The network meter under the result shows 0 B.
Why do the fonts look different?
A PDF has to carry its fonts, and the fonts installed on your computer are not available to a web page. The text is set in DejaVu, a free family with Latin, Cyrillic and Greek letters, in the same style as the original: sans-serif, serif or monospace. The PDF stays searchable and selectable.
Can I convert a Word document to PDF on my phone?
Yes, in the browser, no app. Share the .docx from Files or your mail app to this page, or pick it, and download the PDF.
Can I convert several documents at once?
Up to 20 files per run, up to 100 MB each. Each becomes its own PDF; download them one by one or all in a ZIP.
Will the page numbers be right?
Yes. PAGE and NUMPAGES fields in the header or footer are filled in with the real numbers of the PDF, which may differ from Word's own page count when the lines break differently.

Install it as an app

Chrome, Edge and Android browsers offer to install this site from the address bar or the menu; on iPhone use Share, then Add to Home Screen. It opens like an app, keeps working offline and still processes everything on your device.
