Document converter

Drop a document in any of seven formats and get it back in another: headings, lists, tables and pictures carried over, on your device. The file never leaves it.

Options

How it works

  1. Drop a DOCX, ODT, RTF, HTML, Markdown, text or PDF file, or several.
  2. Choose the output format; for PDF also the paper and the typeface.
  3. Check the preview, download the file, or send a PDF on to Compress, Merge or Sign.

One model, seven formats

Every input is read into the same document model: paragraphs with styles, runs with formatting, lists, tables, pictures, page setup, header and footer. Every output is written from it. The readers and writers are ours: DOCX and ODT are unzipped and parsed as XML, RTF is tokenised control word by control word, HTML goes through a tolerant parser, Markdown through a CommonMark and GFM subset with tables, plain text keeps paragraphs and line breaks, and a PDF is reconstructed from its text with PDF to Word's engine.

What a format cannot hold is left out and said: RTF and text drop pictures, Markdown drops colours and page setup, HTML keeps pictures as data URLs. The preview under the result shows the document as it was read, so you can see what will be in the file before you download it.

Typical jobs

A Markdown README into a Word document for someone who edits in Word; a Word document into clean HTML for a site; an old RTF into DOCX; a Google Docs export as ODT into PDF; a PDF article into Markdown for notes. Up to 20 files of 100 MB each per run, each converted on its own.

Why people use it

  • Free, no account

Every tool is free, with no sign-up, no e-mail address and no limit on how often you use it.

  • Your files stay on your device

The browser opens the file and processes it in memory, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can be kept, leaked or looked at.

  • No watermark

The result is yours as it is: no watermark, no branding, no trial version.

  • Any device

A phone, a tablet or a computer with a current browser is enough: no app to install, no software to update.

  • Works offline after the first visit

The browser keeps the pages and their engines, so a tool you have opened once keeps working without a connection.

  • Open-source engines

The code that does the work is open-source software, named on the Licences page, running as WebAssembly in your browser.

Why it is private

Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.

While a file is being processed, the counter under the result shows the page's network traffic: 0 requests and 0 B for your data.

How to check it yourself, step by step

What you can check yourself

Open your browser's developer tools on the Network tab before you drop a file: while the tool works you will see no request carrying your data, and the counter under every result shows the page's own measurement.

The site sets no cookies, so there is no cookie banner. Anonymous usage counts and error reports without file names are the only things that leave the page, as the privacy policy describes.

Every change goes through thousands of automated tests in three browser engines, including a guard that fails a test if a single byte of a file leaves the page.

How we test

Frequently asked questions

Which formats go in and out?
In: DOCX, ODT, RTF, HTML, Markdown, plain text and PDF. Out: PDF, DOCX, ODT, RTF, HTML, Markdown and plain text. Every pair goes through one document model, so a Markdown file becomes a Word document with real headings, and a Word document becomes clean HTML.
What is carried over?
Headings and the title, paragraphs with alignment and indents, bold, italic, underline, strikethrough and colour, bullets and numbered lists with levels, tables with header rows and merged cells, pictures, line and page breaks, headers and footers with page numbers where the format has them. Each format has limits: RTF and plain text carry no pictures, Markdown has no colours, a PDF input is reconstructed from its text as PDF to Word does.
Is the document uploaded?
No. Every reader and writer is our own code running in a Web Worker on your device; a PDF input is read by PDF.js in the browser. The network meter under the result shows 0 B.
Why does the PDF use other fonts?
A PDF has to carry its fonts, and the fonts installed on your computer are not available to a web page. The text is set in DejaVu Sans, Serif or Mono, in the same style as the original, with Latin, Cyrillic and Greek letters.
Can I convert old .doc or .ppt files?
Not yet: the binary formats from before 2007 are not read. Save them as .docx or .pptx first, or paste the text as .txt or .rtf.
Can I convert on my phone?
Yes, in the browser, no app. Share the file from Files or your mail app to this page, pick the format and download.

Install it as an app

Chrome, Edge and Android browsers offer to install this site from the address bar or the menu; on iPhone use Share, then Add to Home Screen. It opens like an app, keeps working offline and still processes everything on your device.
