PDF to Excel

Drop a PDF and get an .xlsx with its text laid on a grid: rows by line, columns by position, numbers you can sum. All on your device.

Options

How it works

  1. Drop a PDF anywhere on this page.
  2. Choose a sheet per page or everything on one sheet, and the pages you want.
  3. Check the preview, download the .xlsx and open it in Excel, LibreOffice or Google Sheets.

From a page to a grid

PDF.js reads every letter's position and font; letters on one baseline are joined into a line, and a line breaks into cells wherever the text leaves a gap wider than a couple of letters. The left edges of all cells on the page are clustered into columns, so a table set with aligned columns comes back as the same grid. Cells that hold a number, with thousands separators, a decimal comma or point or a percent sign, are typed as numbers with a matching format; bold text is kept bold; column widths follow the longest cell.

Each page becomes a sheet named after its page number, or every page's rows go one after another on a single sheet. What the converter does not do yet: read ruled table borders, merge cells, or keep colours. A scanned page has no text and gives an empty sheet; OCR first.

Bank statements, invoices, reports

The usual job is a statement or a report exported as PDF whose figures you need in a spreadsheet. Convert, check the preview under the result, download and sum. Up to 20 PDFs of 200 MB each per run, each giving its own workbook; a page range limits the work to the tables you want.

Why people use it

  • Free, no account

Every tool is free, with no sign-up, no e-mail address and no limit on how often you use it.

  • Your files stay on your device

The browser opens the file and processes it in memory, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can be kept, leaked or looked at.

  • No watermark

The result is yours as it is: no watermark, no branding, no trial version.

  • Any device

A phone, a tablet or a computer with a current browser is enough: no app to install, no software to update.

  • Works offline after the first visit

The browser keeps the pages and their engines, so a tool you have opened once keeps working without a connection.

  • Open-source engines

The code that does the work is open-source software, named on the Licences page, running as WebAssembly in your browser.

Why it is private

Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.

While a file is being processed, the counter under the result shows the page's network traffic: 0 requests and 0 B for your data.

How to check it yourself, step by step

What you can check yourself

Open your browser's developer tools on the Network tab before you drop a file: while the tool works you will see no request carrying your data, and the counter under every result shows the page's own measurement.

The site sets no cookies, so there is no cookie banner. Anonymous usage counts and error reports without file names are the only things that leave the page, as the privacy policy describes.

Every change goes through thousands of automated tests in three browser engines, including a guard that fails a test if a single byte of a file leaves the page.

How we test

Frequently asked questions

How does it find the columns?
A PDF has letters at positions, not cells. Text on one baseline becomes a row; a wide gap in the line separates cells; the left edges of all cells on the page are clustered into columns. Tables set with regular columns come out as a grid; text that was never a table comes out as one cell per line.
Do the numbers become numbers?
Yes. Cells that hold only a number, with a thousands separator, a decimal comma or point, or a percent sign, are typed as numbers with a matching format, so SUM works on them. Dates and amounts with text around them stay text.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
A scan has no text layer, so the sheet would be empty; the result says how many pages are scans. Run OCR first, then convert the searchable PDF.
Is the PDF uploaded?
No. PDF.js reads the file in your browser, the grid is built on your device and the .xlsx is written there. The network meter under the result shows 0 B.
Can I convert only some pages?
Yes, type them in the Pages field, for example 1-3, 5. Each converted page becomes a sheet named after its page number, or all of them go on one sheet in order.
Why are two columns merged, or one split in two?
Columns are found from the gaps between cells. Text set very tight can join two columns; a column of mixed widths can split. The preview shows the grid before you download, and a few cells are quick to move in Excel.

Install it as an app

Chrome, Edge and Android browsers offer to install this site from the address bar or the menu; on iPhone use Share, then Add to Home Screen. It opens like an app, keeps working offline and still processes everything on your device.
