Excel to PDF

Drop an .xlsx and get a PDF of its sheets as tables, numbers formatted as the sheet shows them, laid out on your device. The file never leaves it.

Options

How it works

  1. Drop an .xlsx anywhere on this page, or pick several.
  2. Choose A4 or Letter, let the orientation follow the width of the sheet, and keep or hide the grid.
  3. Download the PDF, or send it on to Compress, Merge or Protect.

What a sheet becomes on paper

The converter reads the workbook itself: shared strings, number formats, styles, column widths, merged ranges and the frozen pane. Each sheet becomes one table in the order of the tabs, with the sheet's name above it when the workbook has several. Rows are never split over two pages and the header row, the frozen one or a bold first row, is repeated at the top of every page, as Excel's print titles do. Numbers are right-aligned and shown with their formats; dates come out as the sheet shows them.

Hidden sheets are left out. Pictures, charts, comments, data validation and conditional formatting are not drawn, and a sheet with more than a quarter of a million cells is cut there and named in a note.

When to use it

A price list or a timesheet to send where the recipient should not edit it, a budget to attach to a report, a schedule to print the same on any printer. Afterwards the PDF can go to Compress PDF for an upload limit, Merge PDF to join it with a cover page, or Protect PDF for a password.

Why people use it

  • Free, no account

Every tool is free, with no sign-up, no e-mail address and no limit on how often you use it.

  • Your files stay on your device

The browser opens the file and processes it in memory, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can be kept, leaked or looked at.

  • No watermark

The result is yours as it is: no watermark, no branding, no trial version.

  • Any device

A phone, a tablet or a computer with a current browser is enough: no app to install, no software to update.

  • Works offline after the first visit

The browser keeps the pages and their engines, so a tool you have opened once keeps working without a connection.

  • Open-source engines

The code that does the work is open-source software, named on the Licences page, running as WebAssembly in your browser.

Why it is private

Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.

While a file is being processed, the counter under the result shows the page's network traffic: 0 requests and 0 B for your data.

How to check it yourself, step by step

What you can check yourself

Open your browser's developer tools on the Network tab before you drop a file: while the tool works you will see no request carrying your data, and the counter under every result shows the page's own measurement.

The site sets no cookies, so there is no cookie banner. Anonymous usage counts and error reports without file names are the only things that leave the page, as the privacy policy describes.

Every change goes through thousands of automated tests in three browser engines, including a guard that fails a test if a single byte of a file leaves the page.

How we test

Frequently asked questions

What does the PDF keep from the spreadsheet?
Every visible sheet in order, as a table: column widths, bold and italic, cell fills and text colours, horizontal merges, the numbers formatted as the sheet shows them (decimals, thousands separators, percentages, dates), the frozen or bold first row repeated on every page. Charts, pictures, comments and conditional formatting are not drawn.
Are formulas recalculated?
No. The PDF shows the value the sheet last computed, which is what Excel stores next to every formula. A sheet saved without a recalculation shows its last values.
Is the spreadsheet uploaded?
No. The .xlsx is unzipped and laid out by our own code in a Web Worker on your device, and the PDF is written there too. The network meter under the result shows 0 B.
The sheet is wider than the page. What happens?
With the orientation on automatic, a sheet wider than a portrait page turns the PDF to landscape; one wider still is scaled to fit the page width, so the columns stay together. Lower the text size for a denser table.
Can I convert an Excel file to PDF on my phone?
Yes, in the browser, no app. Share the .xlsx from Files or your mail app to this page, or pick it, and download the PDF.
Which files are accepted?
XLSX, the format Excel has written since 2007 and what LibreOffice, Numbers and Google Sheets export. Old .xls files and CSV are not read: save them as .xlsx first.

Install it as an app

Chrome, Edge and Android browsers offer to install this site from the address bar or the menu; on iPhone use Share, then Add to Home Screen. It opens like an app, keeps working offline and still processes everything on your device.
