How it works
- Drop a PDF anywhere on this page.
- Choose Flowing text to edit the document, or Fixed layout to keep every line where it was.
- Check the preview, download the .docx and open it in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs.
How a PDF becomes a document again
A PDF has no paragraphs: it has letters placed on a page. The converter reads every letter's position and font with PDF.js, joins them into lines, then lines into paragraphs where the spacing, the indents and the sentence ends say so. Headings are told apart by their size against the body text, bullets and numbers by the marker a line starts with, bold and italic by the font. A line repeated at the top or bottom of most pages becomes the header or footer, with the changing number turned into a page field. Pictures are placed inline at their size.
Two modes are declared rather than promised: Flowing text, for a document you will edit, where ruled tables and clearly aligned columns become Word tables, and Fixed layout, where each line sits in a frame at its position on the page and tables stay as lines. Nested tables, footnotes and text in rotated frames are the known limits today; the result lists what was left out.
Scans, phones and what to do next
A scanned PDF holds a picture, not text: convert it with OCR first, then bring the searchable PDF here. On a phone the .docx opens in Word, Google Docs or Pages. Up to 20 PDFs of 200 MB each per run, and the preview under the result shows the structure found before you download, so you can switch mode and run again.
Why people use it
Free, no account
Every tool is free, with no sign-up, no e-mail address and no limit on how often you use it.
Your files stay on your device
The browser opens the file and processes it in memory, on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so nothing can be kept, leaked or looked at.
No watermark
The result is yours as it is: no watermark, no branding, no trial version.
Any device
A phone, a tablet or a computer with a current browser is enough: no app to install, no software to update.
Works offline after the first visit
The browser keeps the pages and their engines, so a tool you have opened once keeps working without a connection.
Open-source engines
The code that does the work is open-source software, named on the Licences page, running as WebAssembly in your browser.
Why it is private
Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.
While a file is being processed, the counter under the result shows the page's network traffic: 0 requests and 0 B for your data.
How to check it yourself, step by step
What you can check yourself
Open your browser's developer tools on the Network tab before you drop a file: while the tool works you will see no request carrying your data, and the counter under every result shows the page's own measurement.
The site sets no cookies, so there is no cookie banner. Anonymous usage counts and error reports without file names are the only things that leave the page, as the privacy policy describes.
Every change goes through thousands of automated tests in three browser engines, including a guard that fails a test if a single byte of a file leaves the page.
Frequently asked questions
- Will the Word file look like the PDF?
- In Flowing text mode the result is made for editing: lines are joined back into paragraphs, headings and lists are real Word styles, two columns are read in order, repeated header and footer lines become a real header and footer with a page number. In Fixed layout mode every line is pinned where it was on the page, which looks closer to the PDF but is awkward to edit.
- Does it work with scanned PDFs?
- A scan has no text layer, only a picture of the page, so the Word file would hold that picture alone. The result says how many pages are scans; run OCR first to get editable text, then convert.
- Are tables kept?
- Ruled tables, with lines drawn between the cells, come back as real Word tables: one cell per box, merged header cells kept merged, a first row in bold marked as the header row. Tables without lines are recognised only when their columns line up clearly over at least three rows. Complex or nested tables may still come out as lines of text in reading order.
- Is the PDF uploaded?
- No. PDF.js reads the file in your browser, the document is rebuilt on your device and the .docx is written there. The network meter under the result shows 0 B.
- Why are some words joined or split?
- A PDF stores letters at positions, not words: spaces are worked out from the gaps between them. Text set very tight or very loose can come out with a space too few or too many; a quick find and replace in Word fixes it.
- Can I convert only some pages?
- Yes, type them in the Pages field, for example 1-3, 5. The page count in the result counts the pages you chose.
- Can I convert a PDF to Word on my phone?
- Yes, in the browser, with no app. The .docx opens in Word, Google Docs or Pages on the phone, or share it on to your computer.
Install it as an app
Chrome, Edge and Android browsers offer to install this site from the address bar or the menu; on iPhone use Share, then Add to Home Screen. It opens like an app, keeps working offline and still processes everything on your device.
