WhatsApp voice note to MP3: save, convert, trim

Updated November 3, 2026

A voice note that holds an address, a verbal agreement, a grandparent's story or the instructions a tradesman gave you lives inside one chat, in a format few programs outside WhatsApp open. Getting it out and turning it into an MP3 takes a few taps on the phone and a minute in the browser.

This guide covers the three steps people search for: saving the note as a file, converting .opus to MP3 without installing anything, and cleaning it up, cutting the silence at the start or lifting a mumbled recording. Nothing is uploaded at any step.

Get the note out of WhatsApp

On Android, long-press the voice note, open the menu or the share icon and choose Share; pick Files or a file manager and the note is saved as a file ending in .opus. If sharing is not offered, the Export chat option in the chat's menu, with media included, produces a ZIP that holds every voice note in the conversation; Extract archive on this site opens that ZIP in the browser.

On an iPhone, long-press the note, choose Forward, then the share icon in the corner and Save to Files; the file lands in the folder you pick in the Files app. Exporting the chat works the same way, with Attach media on, and the export can be saved to Files too. In both cases what you get is the original recording as WhatsApp stored it, not a re-recording.

Convert .opus to MP3 in the browser

Open Convert audio, drop the .opus files (up to 50 at once) and leave the format on MP3. On Automatic, the bitrate for an MP3 made from another codec is 192 kbit/s, which is music quality and more than a voice needs; choose the Voice preset, 64 kbit/s mono at 22 kHz, and a ten-minute note comes out small and sounds the same. Press Convert and each note becomes an MP3 with its original name.

The decoding is done by your browser and the MP3 is written by the LAME encoder, a small file the page fetches once. The files never leave the device; the meter under the results shows how many bytes went out while it worked. The MP3 plays in the car, from any mail attachment, in a transcription app and on any computer from the last two decades.

Trim it and make it louder

A note often starts with two seconds of breathing and ends with a goodbye you do not need. Open Trim audio, or use Continue with under the converted file: drag across the waveform or type the start and end, keep the part, and save. With the format left on Same as the file, one kept stretch is copied without re-encoding, so the cut costs no quality.

Recorded in a noisy street with the phone far from the mouth, a note can be too quiet to play in a meeting. Change audio volume shows the file's loudest point and lets you raise the level in decibels or as a percentage; the panel warns when a boost would clip, and Normalize raises the whole file as far as it can go without distortion. It cannot remove background noise, only lift or lower what is there.

Keep it private

A voice note is often the most personal file on a phone. Every tool in this guide decodes and encodes on the device, in a Web Worker in the browser; nothing is sent to a server and there is no account or history. When you are done, the files sit in your Downloads folder and nowhere else.

Tips

  • Convert the original note, not one that was already forwarded through another app; each lossy conversion costs a little.
  • Name the MP3 after the date and the person while you remember what it is; the file name is all you will have later.
  • For a transcription service, 16 kHz mono is plenty; it is in the sample rate list.
  • Keep the .opus too: it is smaller than the MP3 and it is the original.

Questions

Why does the file end in .opus and not .mp3?
WhatsApp records voice notes with the Opus codec, which is tiny for speech. It plays in the app and in most browsers, but many players and services still expect MP3.
Does the MP3 lose quality?
A little, as any lossy-to-lossy conversion does; on speech at 64 kbit/s or more you will not hear it. Pick a higher bitrate if the note contains music.
Can I join several notes into one file?
Yes, with Join audio files: drop the converted MP3s in order and save one file.
Does this work on the phone itself?
Yes, in a current Chrome or Safari: open the tool page, pick the file from Files or Downloads, and the result is saved back there.
