Make a boomerang GIF
A boomerang is a short clip that plays forward, then backward, forever: a jump that never lands, a wave that keeps coming back. This preset sets the tool to that mode with a two-second window; move the start and end over the thumbnails to frame the moment, and the frames are written out forward and then in reverse, without doubling the first and last one so the loop has no hiccup.
The GIF is built on your device: frames are decoded by your browser, reduced to one shared palette and stored as the difference from the previous frame, which keeps a boomerang small. Nothing is uploaded and there is no watermark.
Tips
- Pick a moment with movement in one direction (a jump, a turn, a splash): reversed, it reads as a loop. Static scenes make a dull boomerang.
- Keep it to one or two seconds and 10–15 frames per second; the width can stay at 480 px for chat.
- Add a caption if you like; it stays on your device like everything else here.
Why it is private
Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.
Frequently asked questions
- How long should a boomerang be?
- One to two seconds of source: played forward and back that gives a three to four second loop, which is what the Instagram and Snapchat versions do.
- Does it loop forever?
- Yes, 'Loop' is on by default. Untick it for a GIF that plays the forward-and-back sequence once.
