Compress image for WhatsApp

WhatsApp recompresses every photo you send: it shrinks it to roughly 1600 px on the long side and applies its own JPEG quality. If you send a 12 MP photo, you get a double compression and a blurry result. The trick is to do the first step yourself, well: this preset resizes to 1600 px and encodes at quality 80 with MozJPEG, so what WhatsApp receives is already small and clean.

Options

Your photos stay on your device; the tool runs in the browser and you send the downloaded file as usual.

Tips

  • To send a photo without any WhatsApp compression, send it as a document (the paperclip, then Document) and use the 100 KB or 50 KB preset to keep it light.
  • Group chats on slow connections appreciate small files: 1600 px at quality 80 is usually 200–400 KB.
  • Screenshots with text look better as PNG; WhatsApp converts them to JPEG anyway, so send them as documents if the text matters.

Why it is private

Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.

Frequently asked questions

Does this remove the location from my photos?
Yes. The image is rebuilt from pixels, so EXIF data including GPS coordinates is removed. WhatsApp also strips it, but now it never leaves your device in the first place.
What about videos?
This tool is for images. A video compressor is planned for a later release.
