How to send a large PDF on WhatsApp

Updated October 29, 2026

WhatsApp accepts documents up to 2 GB, so the limit itself is rarely the problem. The problem is that a 60 MB scanned PDF takes minutes to upload on mobile data, fills the other person's phone, and opens slowly in their viewer.

The fix is to make the PDF smaller before you send it. Here is how, from your phone or your computer, with nothing to install.

Compress it first

Open the compress PDF tool in the phone's browser, pick the file from your files or from a share sheet, and choose the "chat" quality. The tool re-samples the pictures inside the PDF to phone-screen resolution and keeps the text as is.

A typical scanned document shrinks 5 to 10 times. The result downloads to your phone; share it to WhatsApp from the downloads folder or with the share button.

Send only the pages that matter

If someone needs three pages of a 200-page manual, send three pages. The split PDF tool takes a page range (for example 12-14) and gives you a new file with just those pages, a few hundred kilobytes instead of tens of megabytes.

Send as a document, not as a photo

WhatsApp offers to send PDFs as documents, which keeps them intact. Avoid screenshots of pages: they are heavier than the compressed PDF, cannot be searched, and the text is blurry when zoomed.

Tips

  • On Wi-Fi the upload is fast anyway; the real win is for the person receiving it on mobile data.
  • Compress once, keep the small copy: you will send the same PDF again.
  • Nothing is uploaded to this site: the compression runs in your phone's browser.

Questions

What is the WhatsApp document limit?
2 GB per file, on every platform. Older versions had 100 MB.
Why is my PDF still big after compression?
It was probably already compressed, or it is mostly vector drawings (maps, CAD), which the tool leaves untouched. Splitting into parts is the next step.
Will the compressed PDF still print?
Yes, at normal quality. For a print shop, send the original.
