Character counter, with and without spaces

A 280-character post, a 150-character meta description, a 500-character bio, a form field that stops at 1,000: limits are set in characters, and your editor counts words. Paste or type here and the count updates with every keystroke, with and without spaces, next to words, sentences and reading time.

The text stays in this browser: it is kept on this device so you can come back to it, and the Clear button removes it. Nothing is ever sent to a server.

Tips

  • Platforms count differently: X counts most emoji as two characters and shortens links to 23; check the limit in the platform's own editor before posting.
  • 'Without spaces' excludes spaces, tabs and line breaks; 'with spaces' counts everything you typed.
  • Letters with accents count as one character here; some old forms count them as two (bytes). If a form rejects your text, that is why.
  • For a word limit instead (an abstract, an essay), the same page shows words.

Why it is private

Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.

Frequently asked questions

Does it count characters in any language?
Yes. Counting uses the browser's own text segmentation, so Romanian, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese or Arabic are all counted correctly.
Why is my count different from Word?
Word treats some punctuation and line breaks differently. For a platform limit, the platform's editor is the reference; this page matches X, Instagram and most forms.
Is there a text size limit?
No practical one; long documents count instantly.
