Twitter / X character counter
X (formerly Twitter) allows 280 characters per post for most accounts, and the composer only shows a circle that turns red when you are over. This counter sets the goal to 280 characters and shows a bar with the exact number remaining, or how many you must cut, as you type or paste. Words, sentences and reading time are counted at the same time, so a thread can be planned post by post.

Characters are counted the way people see them: an emoji with skin tone or a flag is one character here, and the counter keeps your draft in this browser only. Nothing is sent anywhere; the limit is a preset you can change for other platforms.
Tips
- Links count as 23 characters on X whatever their length; the counter shows the real length, so budget 23 for each link.
- Line breaks and spaces count. Use the "Tidy spaces" button to remove doubles before posting.
- Switch the preset to Instagram, LinkedIn or SMS to check the same text for another platform.
Why it is private
Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.
Frequently asked questions
- Does X count emoji as two characters?
- X weighs most emoji as two characters and CJK text as two per character under its weighted counting; this counter shows one per visible character, so for emoji-heavy posts leave a little margin.
- What about Premium accounts?
- Premium allows much longer posts, up to 25 000 characters. Set a custom goal to check against that limit.
