Annotate a PDF in your browser

This page opens the PDF editor with the Note tool selected. Select a passage to highlight, underline or strike it through; drag to draw a rectangle or an ellipse; draw freehand with a finger, pen or mouse; or place a text note where a remark belongs. Each note has its own colour, opacity and line width and can be moved, changed or deleted until you save.

Notes are saved into the PDF as the kind of notes other PDF programs show and list, with their appearance written in, so the review looks the same wherever the file is opened. The page under them is untouched: a highlight does not alter the text. The file stays on your device; the editor's code is downloaded once and then works offline.

Not yet possible: editing notes made by other programs (you can delete them and add your own). A line of existing text can be changed with the Edit text tool where its font allows it; otherwise the substitute is shown before saving.

Tips

  • On a digitally signed document, notes are usually allowed and are added without touching what was signed; the editor says on opening what the signature permits.
  • Highlighting needs selectable text: on a scanned page, draw a rectangle instead, or run Text recognition first.

Why it is private

Everything you type or drop here is handled by your browser, on your device. Nothing is uploaded. To verify, open your browser's developer tools, go to the Network tab, and use the tool: you will see no request carrying your data.

Frequently asked questions

Can the recipient remove my notes?
Yes, as with notes from any program: they are separate from the page content. To make a mark permanent, add it as text or a picture instead.
Can I edit notes that were already in the file?
Not yet: notes from other programs can be deleted but not changed here. Notes you add in this editor can be changed until you save.
